NSTAR Electric Basic Service customers have the choice of a six-month fixed price, or a monthly variable price. Both the fixed and the variable pricing closely reflect the actual price of electricity on the wholesale market.

- Upon opening your account, all residential and small commercial/industrial customers are to be placed on this fixed rate. You are allowed to choose the monthly variable rate, however you can only make this choice once.
- The rates for each period is based on our contract with the Basic Service provider.
- If you are on a fixed rate for Basic Service and decide to switch to a Competitive Power Supplier before the period is over, your electric bill will be recalculated. This means your electric bill for the period you were on the fixed rate will be recalculated as if you were on the monthly variable rate for that period. This ensures that all consumers pay the actual cost of the electricity they have used. This adjustment may be a credit or debit, and will be reflected on your first bill after the switch is effective. We can further explain this recalculation to you.

About Basic Service
As an NSTAR customer, you receive Basic Service if you do not receive your
electric supply from a Competitive Power Supplier.
The competitive power market is still developing in our region. At present, there are few power suppliers from which to choose. For residential customers, the number of choices is particularly limited. As the market matures, this situation should change.
When this happens, you may wish to shop the competitive market for your supplier. You can then compare the Competitive Power Suppliers’ options to the Basic Service options from NSTAR Electric. In addition to price, other service offerings may be of value to you. You may want to review the length and terms of your proposed contract with the competitive power supplier, as well as billing, payment, deposit, warranty and other information.
A list of Licensed Competitive Power Suppliers is maintained by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and can be obtained by visiting www.mass.gov/thepower.
As new power suppliers are licensed to do business in our state, they will appear on this list. We recommend that you periodically call that phone number or visit the web site above to stay current on competitive power suppliers in Massachusetts.
If, in the future, you choose a Competitive Power Supplier, the supplier’s prices will go into effect on your next scheduled meter reading date, provided NSTAR Electric had notice of this change at least two business days prior to your next scheduled meter reading date. (Your next scheduled meter reading date appears on your electric bill.)
If you are currently a Basic Service Fixed rate customer and opt to use a Competitive Supplier, up to six months of your past billing will be recalculated to reflect the month-to-month Basic Service Variable rate. This adjustment may result in either a credit or debit.
