Crane & Derrick Safety
When you are working outside with any device that could potentially contact overhead energized electrical conductors such as a crane, derrick, excavator or other devices please make sure to look for overhead electric wires and keep a safe distance away.
For lines carrying up to 50 kV, cranes and derricks need to be kept at least 10 feet away at all times. For higher voltage a suggested safe distance of 35 feet should be observed. Please make sure to clearly mark safe boundaries using qualified spotters, tape, signs or barricades - ensuring workers and equipment are the required safe distance.
If you are unsure of the voltage of nearby power lines, have questions about clearance requirements or would like to discuss how to work safely near power lines, please contact NSTAR at 888-633-3797.
More information about crane and derrick safety guidelines is available on the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) web site.
