NSTAR also donates more that $1.5 million a year to communities in our service area through
the NSTAR Foundation. The Foundation makes available funds, manpower, goods and services,
to support local, high-priority concerns and needs focusing on youth development, economic
development, and quality of life issues. NSTAR is committed to servicing communities in
many different ways.
Energy Efficiency Programs
NSTAR has numerous
electric and
gas
energy efficiency programs for residential customers and numerous
electric and
gas
energy efficiency programs for business customers that help save energy and money.
Storm Restoration Plan
The NSTAR storm restoration plan is a formal program to restore power to our customers
quickly and safely following a major storm or event. As part of this effort, NSTAR always
keeps a close eye on weather forecasts for the potential impact on service to our customers.
Our employees have emergency assignments and work in conjunction with state and local
emergency personnel. During outages, our priority is repairing facilities that will
restore the largest number of customers first, then focusing on smaller circuits and
individual homes.
Distribution vs. Generation
As part of the Massachusetts Electric Industry Restructuring Act of 1997,
electric utilities in Massachusetts sold their power plants. Electricity is now generated
by independent, unregulated power producers selling in a competitive market. NSTAR then
delivers that electricity to homes and businesses.
