This July, NSTAR will be offering an exciting new option for
customers - the option to have your electricity supplied by
renewable sources.
Highlights
- Basic Service customers will be able to choose to have half or all of their electricity come from NSTAR Green.
- There will be an additional premium for this option. While exact pricing still needs to be approved by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities, the NSTAR Green option will, on average, add an additional $4 to $7 a month to your bill, depending on the NSTAR Green option chosen.
- The program is initially offering electricity generated from Maple Ridge Wind Farm in upstate New York.
- Our customers can pre-enroll in NSTAR Green.
About NSTAR Green
The objective of NSTAR Green is to enable NSTAR Basic Service
customers – those who buy electricity from NSTAR rather than
from a competitive supplier – to purchase electricity generated
from renewable sources.

By participating in this program, NSTAR customers will support the development of renewable energy resources in the region. Participation will help reduce fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and increase the sustainability of the renewable industry.
Making The "Green" Choice
Residential and small commercial Basic Service
customers are eligible to enroll. There is no term commitment
for NSTAR Green and customers can return to Basic Service at any
time.
Customer accounts in good standing with no overdue balance are
eligible.
Participating customers can choose to purchase all or half of their electricity from wind energy generating facilities. There is an additional premium for NSTAR Green, which is estimated to be between $4 and $7 a month. Exact pricing per kWh will be available in the coming weeks and this web page will be updated with that information.
For customers who want to be placed on NSTAR Green, pre-enrollment is currently available
NSTAR has signed two, 10-year contracts to supply "green" power to customers. One contract is with PPM Energy to receive 30 megawatts of clean energy from the Maple Ridge Wind Farm in upstate New York. The other contract is with TransCanada Corporation for 30 megawatts from the Kibby Wind Power Project currently under development in Maine.
NSTAR is not affiliated with either of these renewable generating companies. Besides receiving green power, nothing else about your NSTAR service will change.
NSTAR's Commitment to "Green Power"
NSTAR Green stands out as a unique program because it is
providing our customers with actual wind-generated electricity.
It is just one of several initiatives NSTAR is
undertaking to increase the use of renewable energy in
Massachusetts. Greater reliance on renewable resources will
diversify our electricity generation mix, help attain
environmental goals and support the development of the renewable
electricity market in New England.
