Smart Energy Pilot FAQ

NSTAR is pleased to announce we have reached our target participation rate for this early phase of the Smart Energy Pilot. However, a larger phase of this pilot will begin in early 2011.

If you meet the eligibility requirements below and would like to be contacted for participation in this next phase of this pilot, please fill out the enrollment form and NSTAR will contact you.

What is a Smart Grid program?
The term “Smart Grid” can be used to cover a number of different technologies and applications currently being developed across the country that aim to help consumers and utility companies better manage energy use and the infrastructure that delivers energy to customers. The NSTAR Smart Energy Pilot program is also a Smart Grid program – giving customers tools and information to better manage and monitor their electricity use.

Why is NSTAR sponsoring this pilot program?
The goal of the pilot is to see if giving customers the information and tools needed to better manage their energy use will result in substantial decreases in their energy bill each month.

Who is Tendril?
Tendril is a leading energy management technology provider that provides energy management software, hardware and services for both consumers and utility companies. The company has been selected by NSTAR to provide the necessary equipment and web interface for the Smart Energy Pilot.

When does this program start?
A small group of customers, 250 in total, has been accepted into the Smart Energy program in June. The full pilot will begin in early 2011, when approximately 3,000 customers will be accepted into the program.

When does this program end?
The program does not have a firm end date, and will continue for at least the next few years.

How much money will I save on my electric bill?
While it’s not easy to predict the amount you’ll save, the products provided to you as a participant in the Smart Energy pilot should help you understand your daily, weekly, and monthly costs in ways that previously were not possible.

What are you going to install in my house?
All participants will receive three devices called Tendril Insight, Tendril Translate and Tendril Transport, and access to a web portal called Vantage. Some participants will also get a smart programmable thermostat called Tendril Set Point.

Can I cancel at any time?
Yes, you can cancel at any time.

Do I get to keep the equipment you mentioned?
Yes.

Who can participate in the program?
NSTAR is currently targeting customers in Newton and Hopkinton who meet specific criteria needed for this portion of the pilot. For instance, participants need to have broadband access in your home. Other criteria might also be used to determine eligibility. If you believe you are eligible, you can sign up online.

My home is for sale. Can I join the program?
Sorry, but for this phase of the pilot we’re looking for residents who plan on remaining in their home for at least the next few years

How long after I am accepted will you install my Smart Energy equipment?
After you enroll, we’ll usually install within two to three weeks.

Do I need to be home for the installation?
Yes.
