Understanding Your Gas Bill
To help you better understand your NSTAR Electric bill, below is an
example of a typical residential bill. Simply click on the red
buttons to learn what each section of the bill is all about.
Based on valuable customer feedback, NSTAR began sending
most residential customers a redesigned bill in March 2007. The bill is
easier to understand, provides customers with helpful bill
analysis information and includes a graph charting energy use
over a 13 month period.
This information is included on the front "Summary" page
of customers' bills. Page two - the "Detail" page of the bill -
provides all of the information customers received in the past.
This is your NSTAR Account Number. For every account you have with NSTAR, there will be a different account number.
All payments need to be made on or before this date to appear on your next bill.
This is the address NSTAR mails your bills to. In some cases your mailing address will be different from the address NSTAR provides service to.
This is the amount owed on your account. This amount will include all current, as well as any past due, charges.
When paying your NSTAR bill by U.S. mail, please fill in the amount you have paid in this box.
When paying your NSTAR bill by U.S. Mail, make sure to return the top portion of this billing statement with your payment.
This is the address NSTAR is providing electric service to. In some cases customers have different mailing and service addresses.

The estimated day NSTAR will next read your meter.
Information in this box allows you to compare your energy use and charges this month to energy use last month and last year.
Information in this area helps compare several factors that might influence your energy use - it includes the average daily temperature, how many days the billing period was, and your average
daily energy use.
A graphic representation of your gas use in
therms over the past 13 months. The total number of days in each billing period is also shown.
The total "Please Pay Amount" from the last bill NSTAR sent you.
This account summary section shows all charges and credits applied to your NSTAR account since your last bill. The total of these is the "Please Pay Amount," which is also printed on the return portion of your billing statement. The start and end of your current billing period are also noted.
Shows any payment received by NSTAR before the printing of your current bill.
The total of any adjustments applied to your account since your last bill.
The cost of delivering gas to your home. Includes the costs of providing services such as metering, billing, account maintenance.
This portion of your bill represents charges associated with the supply of gas only. Because gas is bought in an open market, this section of your bill tends to fluctuate more than the distribution charges on your bill.
The total of both your Delivery Charges and Supplier Charges for this current billing period.
This portion of the bill highlights important information on NSTAR services, programs and other related events.
All payments to your NSTAR account sent via U.S. Mail should use this address.
The date your bill was generated for mailing.
The account summary describes all charges and credits applied to your NSTAR account. The total of these is the amount due, which is also printed in the Return Portion of your billing statement.
In this portion of the bill, you will find how much gas you used in CCF (cubic feet of gas). This is done by subtracting what your meter read the previous month from what it read in the current month. The CCF is then multiplied by the Therm Factor (measures the heat content of natural gas and is used to convert CCF to therms) to get the therms you used in the month.
This is the NSTAR rate you are currently billed on. More information about the different rates available can be found in the "Rates & Tariffs" section of www.nstar.com.
This is an up to 13-month history of your gas use. It includes the meter number at the top of the chart, read date and the amount of therms you were billed for. An asterisk next to a read date indicates an estimated reading.
This portion of your bill gives a breakdown of total charges.
This represents the costs of providing services such as metering, billing and account maintenance. These are fixed costs and are not affected by the actual amount of gas used. Included is a charge for the energy audit program.
Cost of delivering natural gas through NSTAR Gas pipes to you.
This represents the cost of environmental, conservation and industry restructuring programs.
This portion of your bill represents charges associated with the supply of gas only. Because gas is bought in an open market, this section of your bill tends to fluctuate more than the distribution charges on your bill.
