Named Tree Line USA Utility for Work with Community Tree Program
April 30, 2004
Citing national leadership in caring for trees, The National Arbor Day Foundation has named NSTAR a “Tree Line USA Utility.” The Foundation awards this recognition to utilities that demonstrate exemplary practices in tree care, worker training, and public outreach programs. This is the fourth year in a row that NSTAR receives this national honor.
In a letter to NSTAR Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Thomas May, National Arbor Day Foundation President John Rosenow congratulated NSTAR for its achievement. Rosenow said, “Your utility’s effort in meeting Tree Line USA requirements – training your workers in quality tree-care practices and helping your customers to plant appropriate trees near utility lines – not only helps to provide beautiful trees for the future, but also results in long-term operational savings for your utility.”
Paul Sellers, system arborist for NSTAR, said, “We’re proud to be named a Tree Line USA Utility by the National Arbor Day Foundation. This honor recognizes NSTAR’s continued commitment to sound tree maintenance and to keeping our customer’s informed of our ongoing work in their communities.”
One of the keys to NSTAR being honored by the National Arbor Day Foundation is an innovative tree maintenance program. Now in its sixth year, NSTAR’s program combines pre-planning by certified arborists and utility foresters, state-of-the-art trimming methods and proactive community involvement. The successful combination of these factors has resulted in widespread acceptance of NSTAR’s program by state and local forestry experts. The goal of the program is to improve electric service reliability through superior, cost-effective tree maintenance.
NSTAR delivers electricity to about 1.1 million customers and natural gas to about 300,000 customers in more than 100 communities in Central and Eastern Massachusetts. For more information, go to
