NSTAR Up to Challenge of Summer's Second Record Energy Use Day
Today's Electricity Use Exceeds Last Week's All-Time Record
July 27, 2005
With high temperatures
and oppressive humidity once again bearing down on our
area today, NSTAR Electric set another all-time record
for electricity delivered to its 1.1 million electric
customers. Today’s record use surpasses last week’s
record of 4,700 megawatts set Tuesday at 3 p.m. Despite
the extraordinary usage levels, the company says its
system is operating smoothly.
“One week after electricity consumption set a new record, our system was put to the test again this week, with yet another all-time record set today,” said Werner Schweiger, NSTAR’s Senior Vice President of Operations. “Clearly the investments we’ve made over the past several years to enhance the electric system are paying off for our customers.”
With temperatures throughout most of the region anticipated to stay near 90 into the evening, electricity usage will likely remain high.
“Our employees are working tirelessly to ensure customers have access to a reliable supply of electricity during the hot weather," Schweiger added. “We are closely monitoring the electric system to be sure it continues to meet their needs.”
NSTAR transmits and delivers electricity and natural gas to 1.4 million customers in Eastern and Central Massachusetts; including over one million electric customers in 81 communities and nearly 300,000 gas customers in 51 communities.
