Pfizer Named Northeast Business Leader for Energy Efficiency

Partners with NSTAR to Reduce Energy Use, Lower Operating Costs

May 24, 2007
Pfizer, Inc. has been named a Northeast Business Leader for Energy Efficiency by the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships for its dedication to implementing energy efficient strategies and technology in the workplace. Through a partnership with NSTAR, improvements at Pfizer’s research and development facility in Cambridge have led to an estimated 15 percent reduction in energy consumption and an annual energy cost savings of $114,000.

“NSTAR is proud to have worked with Pfizer on such an important and successful project,” said Penni McLean-Conner, NSTAR’s Vice President of Customer Care. “Any business customer interested in increasing the efficiency of their operation should look into the tremendous savings potential available through our commercial energy efficiency programs.”

Commenting on the importance of energy efficiency to their operation, Ronald Slember, Senior Director/Global Energy/Utilities Team Leader for Pfizer, said, “Pfizer is pleased to be recognized for its energy efficiency accomplishments but, more importantly, the results demonstrate that businesses and utilities can work together successfully to both improve business competitiveness and contribute to reducing global warming.”

After an engineering study in 2002 found that the Cambridge facility had higher-than-average energy costs within its industry, Pfizer undertook an extensive energy efficiency initiative with the help of NSTAR’s Business Solutions and Construction Solutions programs. Specific measures implemented at Pfizer include variable speed drives on rooftop air handlers, occupancy sensors on the lighting system throughout the building, automated cooling controls and tankless water heaters. In addition, as part of its health and safety requirements, Pfizer performs a mandatory energy study every two years and monitors energy performance through technical analysis and energy audits.

NSTAR's Business Solutions program helps customers to incorporate energy efficient lighting fixtures, HVAC controls, high-efficiency mechanical equipment, and other energy saving strategies within existing buildings. The Construction Solutions program includes rebates of up to 75 percent of the incremental cost of new energy-efficient equipment, cost sharing for engineering services, and design and commissioning services. NSTAR transmits and delivers electricity and natural gas to 1.4 million customers in Eastern and Central Massachusetts, including over one million electric customers in 81 communities and 300,000 gas customers in 51 communities.
