Residents struggling to pay overdue utility bills are finding it a bit easier now with help from NSTAR’s debt forgiveness program. The program provides qualified customers with assistance in budgeting for their current electricity and natural gas bills, while each month also forgiving a portion of past-due balances.

“Many hard working families have fallen behind on their bills despite their best efforts to pay on time,” said Penni Conner, Vice-President of Customer Care at NSTAR. “With our debt forgiveness program, NSTAR is providing the help many folks need to pull themselves out of debt and start fresh.”

Customers participating in NSTAR's debt forgiveness program are provided with a monthly budget amount to help them better plan for and pay current bills. The company will then forgive up to $200 toward the past-due balance every month as long as the customer continues to pay his or her current bill on time. Enhanced energy efficiency programs to help lower future bills are also available for customers who qualify for the debt forgiveness program.

To take advantage of the debt forgiveness program, current NSTAR customers must first qualify for the company’s residential assistance rate. Anyone interested in more information should speak with one of NSTAR’s specially trained call center representatives by calling 866-315-2496.

NSTAR is the largest Massachusetts-based, investor-owned electric and gas utility. The company transmits and delivers electricity and natural gas to 1.4 million customers in Eastern and Central Massachusetts, including more than one million electric customers in 81 communities and 300,000 gas customers in 51 communities.
