Summer’s Heat is Here – Stay Cool with Tips from NSTAR

July 6, 2010
With temperatures heading into the upper 90s, it’s clear the summer of 2010 has arrived. As the hot weather once again settles over our region, NSTAR is offering advice for keeping homes comfortable while using less energy.

Keeping the heat out keeps the cool in – Sunlight shining in windows adds the largest amount of unwanted summer heat. Closing blinds, drapes and shades during the hottest part of the day keeps the strong sunlight out and indoor temperatures lower.

Air conditioners work best in the shade – If possible, keep room air conditioners out of the sun. They run much more efficiently when kept cool. Installing one in a north-facing window is usually ideal.

Raising the temperature lowers the bill – Keeping air conditioner thermostats set at a moderate temperature saves energy and money. Because air conditioners also remove humidity from the air, they’ll help keep you cool even with a higher temperature setting.

Fans can help keep you cool – During hot weather, fans can create a welcome breeze and keep the air circulating. A fan used in conjunction with air conditioning is a great way to feel cool even with the thermostat turned up.

It’s a great time to cook outside – Instead of using an indoor stove or oven, which can generate heat on an already hot day, treat the family to a meal prepared on an outdoor grill. It that’s not an option, try using a microwave or countertop appliances. They use less energy and create less unwanted heat.

It may be time for an upgrade – If your cooling system is more than 10 years old, consider upgrading to a new unit that has earned the ENERGY STAR for efficiency. Qualifying room and central air conditioners use between 10 and 20 percent less energy without sacrificing comfort. Look for units with the highest Energy Efficiency Ratios for greater savings.
