NSTAR Makes Significant Progress in Customer Restorations After
Tropical Storm Irene
August 31, 2011
NSTAR crews are working around the clock to restore power to customers after Tropical Storm Irene dealt a devastating blow to the region. As of Wednesday afternoon, NSTAR reported that 29,000 customers remain without power, down from a height of more than 250,000.
More than 500 operations crews, along with 110 tree crews, are taking part in the massive restoration effort. NSTAR continued to caution that complete restoration is being hindered by the amount of down trees and power lines, and could take through the end of the week.
“We have made significant progress so far and are getting more crews everyday to assist us in restoring power to customers,” said Werner Schweiger, NSTAR’s Senior Vice President of Operations. “We can appreciate how frustrating it is for customers to be without power and that’s why we’re working as quickly and as safely as possible.”
Crews will continue working until all customers are restored; concentrating first on making the repairs that will benefit the largest number of customers, before addressing problems at individual homes. Crews and support staff have been working rotating shifts to ensure the restoration process moves quickly. Customers can now get updated outage information and restoration estimates on the NSTAR web site.
As always, NSTAR encourages customers whose electric service is affected to report it by calling us at 800-592-2000. And, as always, customers are reminded to stay away from all down wires and to report them to the company and local emergency officials.
